One thing I learned from looking at other girl’s rooms is that there really is no winner! That’s so cheesy, but really I think the best kinds of rooms are the ones that reflect the personality and needs of the inhabitant, so there is no way to determine which is the “best” (although I also suppose that goes for all kinds of design and yet the most popular reality shows are all about picking the “best”).
With that in mind, I decided against picking rooms that have amazing pillow arrangements or incredible artsy wall decorations in favor of someone who made the most out of a really interesting interior design problem - the rooms in her dorm don’t have right angles! It’s a modern building that poses tricky furniture layout situations for its inhabitants. As if that’s not bad enough, she’s not allowed to paint or leave any kind of markings on the bare white walls and sullen dark wood/stone. For anyone who goes to Yale, you know which dorm I’m talking about (not the one with the Lipstick if you’re wondering if it’s Stiles or Morse).
Given all that, our winner has managed to create a very sensitive and neat little abode. Certainly not the pink explosion of the sorority room I had pictured in the original post but very comfortable looking all the same and completely masks the fact that the room is so oddly shaped. Also, instead of trying to fight the drab color scheme of the room she uses it to her advantage by using bedding, wall decoration, and rugs that tend towards earthy, natural tones (i.e. maps, framed floral images, earthy throw pillows, teddy bear, etc). Also, the furniture she adds to the brown pieces that were already in the room are all white (i.e. refrigerator, microwave, bedside table, etc), which keeps the palette limited rather than trying to confuse the place with lots of non-matching items. If you can’t tell by now, I seem to favor well-thought out over eye-catching or flashy things ;)
I was most impressed, however, with the book collection! As an English major I have a LOT of books, but her set easily spans a much larger bookshelf area than mine. Plus hers are laid out super neatly in increasing size order (top shelf) and rainbow color order (bottom shelf). And if you look closely there seems to be some kind of golden trim that runs across the desk area that is reminiscent of the kind of trim you find on old leather books.
So anyway, as promised, the winner will be coming to our launch party as a VIP guest and have the opportunity to be our first guest blogger. Luckily for me, she has an obsession with high fashion in addition to impeccable nesting skills, so she will be writing the next post in our series covering Fashion Week. When her post goes up, you’ll know who she is! I look forward to it!
