Toy Tuesday: Gloomy Bear Dunny

There really has to be something to be said about irony being one of the core reasons why Japanese kawaii works. Take this week’s Toy Tuesday pick, Gloomy Bear Dunny. On first glance, you think, “OMG SO CUTE IT’S PINK WITH BEADY EYES LIKE HELLO KITTY!!!” and then you realize that it has blood dribbling down its mouth to its stomach. Upon that realization, do you find yourself deterred from its cuteness? No. I’m sure you want it even more, knowing that it’s covered in blood because it’s funny. Irony can be cute when it’s funny. To add to the irony, while Gloomy Bear is typically sold as a vinyl toy bear, it’s being sold as a dunny. Dunnies are small collector’s vinyl bunny toys that often come in different themes — this limited edition Dunny is Gloomy Bear themed. So yes, Gloomy Bear is…a vinyl bunny, called dunny.
