If you leave your toothbrush in your cup like I do everyday, then you’ve probably experienced that pale yellow film of mold that starts to grow on the bottom after about a week or so. Upon discovery, if you’re lazy like I am, you’ll tend to ignore it and continue using it anyways. After another week, you’ll look down to see greenery. At that point, you may:

a.) Continue ignoring it until chunks of your little garden start floating in your water.
b.) Stop brushing your teeth as an avoidance tactic.
c.) Finally clean it (rather than using a sponge, I find that the best method is to stuff a piece of towel paper down your cup to scour the bottom).

Like how abstinence is the best way to prevent pregnancies or STIs, the best way to prevent mold from growing in the first place is to not hold your toothbrush in your cup. When you rinse your toothbrush, the bristles collect water. From the bristles, droplets of water drip down the handle and then puddles into the bottom, creating the perfect moist environment for growth.

So here’s another option:

d.) Buy a toothbrush holder. You can do so for about $2 at UniqueCuteStuffForHome or Uxsight.
