On my last day at WonderCon, I attended the Emily the Strange panel. As I sat in the back of the room waiting for the previous panel to be over, a tall, lanky man dressed in head-to-toe black came in and sat down two seats away from me. I had never seen him before. However, it was obvious who it was because of his briefcase with Emily the Strange stickers all over it–Rob Reger, Emily’s creator.

When the previous panel ended, we both made our way to the front of the room. After people settled into their seats, Rob introduced himself and told us that his colleague Buzz Parker could not make it, then started to talk about Emily.

Here is a video of the first 10 minutes of the panel:

Rob encouraged audience participation by giving away prizes such as books and stickers. Toward the end of the panel, he asked this question:

I volunteered to dance and was willing to embarrass myself all for the sake of a free book. I looked like a crazy person flailing my arms around while I danced. For fun, I grabbed two random women from the audience to join me.

There was a Q&A session before it was time for the panel to end:

Thirty minutes later, I was waiting in line at the Dark Horse Comics booth to get my book signed. There, I got to talk to Rob for a little bit and also met artist Winston Smith, who did some artwork for Emily the Strange. I also got to meet Rob’s assistant Danielle.

I had a really fun time that day and Emily the Strange just made it even better.
