This week is the last time Ugly Betty will be gracing its presence on television sets across the United States. In those 4 seasons it has been on air, Betty Suarez has transformed from a nerdy, idealistic, overly enthusiastic go-getter into a more mature, refined young professional. Not only has her inner beauty grown, but her outer beauty as well. As a tribute to Miss Suarez, let us take a look at the evolution of her style throughout the years.
In season 1, Betty was a walking faux pas, not having a clue about fashion before she started working at Mode. Her ungroomed eyebrows, adult braces, frizzy bangs, sensible shoes, sweater vests, and mismatched outfits made her an outcast at Mode and the butt of Marc and Amanda’s many jokes. Although she looked like a librarian who got dressed in the dark, I found much charm in her choices in clothing. They fit in with her naive, overly positive perspective of the world during this season.
During seasons 2 and 3, it is obvious that working at Mode influenced her fashion choices. Her outfits became a little less dowdy and a little more adventurous. Betty stopped looking like she raided her grandma’s closet by experimenting more with wearing bold colors, funky tights and high heels. However, the frizzy bangs and adult braces still remained. (Notice a Blythe doll anywhere?)
The most drastic change in Betty’s look is in season 4. She got a job as a junior editor at Mode and felt that along with her new position, she needed a new look. So away went the bangs and (eventually) the braces and in were side swept bangs, a new pair of glasses, and a toothy smile. Betty also adopted a more sleek and adult look for her outfits. And keeping in true Betty form, she still wears colors and little whimsical accessories that are part of her signature look.
It is kind of sad to think about the cancellation of Ugly Betty. Whatever happens to her in the series finale, I wish her well, even if she is a fictional television character.
Godspeed, Betty Suarez! You will be missed.
