Malaysian radio stations have banned Lady Gaga’s song “Born This Way”, due to its pro-gay lyrics. Indecipherable noise covers up parts of the song for its radio edit in the predominantly Muslim country, after they were deemed “offensive” against the belief of the Malaysians.
One example of this is the line “No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I’m on the right track baby”.
“Taboo” is used by Malaysians to describe the issue of being gay, lesbian of bisexual. However, Pan Khee Teik, activist at Nalaysian gay rights, said “Lady GaGa was attempting to address this very thing in her song. How dare they play that song and cut out its shining heart?”
Coming from Malaysia, this is news that I feel I can really relate to. I can understand the reasons behind the banning of the songs because I can see how they can be deemed offensive. On the other hand, I can also see why some people would reckon that banning that song is going too far. What do you think?

I like the song a lot but hey if it goes against their beliefs, they have every right to ban it.
I personally don’t like this song but I think the media is being more and more tight. It’s her freedom of speech.

I can understand why Malaysia can’t accept that in their society yet however it depends on how people interpret it. Thanks for sharing.

they have a point in there,, nobody can blame them for what they did..
03/24/11 2:33 am
They can ban it but people still have access to the internet.
03/24/11 2:04 am
lol Before this, it was heavily overplayed on local radio stations. Well, that’s Malaysia for you. The people themselves mostly don’t care but certain parties feel very strongly about it.
No thanks to all this conservativeness, there was no shirt tearing or Lady Heehee at SS3.
wowww really?
w/e their efforts are futile becuase they can never ban internet!
yes, like what nuhaaizanni and mscoolicemui, our country is conservative. Even kissing scene in a movie will be cut out, of course they won’t broadcast Lady Gaga song. Imagine how many singers are banned from having concert here just because of their outfits are considered as too much exposure. but ya, we have internet and still can enjoy this song.

I never pay attention to the lyrics.. but to know that this song is banned is not that surprising~ Like mscoolicemui said, our country is a bit conservative. Lady Gaga wasn’t the only one who had been banned~ in fact, our own local artist was treated the same way before. So I hope no one will make a big fuss about it~ People still listen to her though~ We got internet~~ and she herself got many supporters~

oo...it’s my country~ it’s not a surprise as Malaysia is very conservative...singers can’t expose too much in the concert too...I’m not against the ban ...song writers should write better lyrics..
:(
That’s sad.
But I guess they really must not like gay people. >_>
But still.
Original song is completely ruined. D:
why ban it!!!
thanks for sharing

I can see why Malaysia would have banned the song since the lyrics do support all types of sexual orientation. I wonder if this will make people want to hear the song even more due to this controversy. I guess the country can ban it but that doesn’t mean that people in Malaysia won’t listen to it. I guess. Thanks for sharing!

o.o the song no offense seems a little offensive. but i understand why its been ban .. but thanks for sharing
03/23/11 4:47 pm
i can see why some people would be offended but it’s a bit too much to ban the song, she’s actually trying to incorporate all types of people with all different types of sexual preferences in it so that is a bit too harsh, although it is seen as taboo in malaysia and many other countries. Maybe it’s just me, but all that stigma against a song is a bit too much.
thanks for sharing!

i can see why some people would be offended… and i can see how some dont agree it should be banned ^^; i didnt know about this...in fact, ive heard “born this way” a few times but didnt really pay attention to the lyrics *fail* XD thanks for sharing!
