When the summer sun is up, most of the protection reminders are for your skin, but you can’t forget that your hair is feeling the heat just as much. If you can incorporate some of these tips, it will help keep your hair healthy and happy as you enjoy this much-needed sunshine.

1. Don’t Forget SPF! | It’s pretty logical, the SPF in your sunscreen protects your skin, so giving your hair some SPF will help lend some of that protection to your lovely locks. Obviously it wouldn’t look too good to have sunscreen sitting on your hair, but they do make SPF sprays that are water-resistant and help protect against UVA and UVB rays.

Victoria’s Secret offers the Color Protect UV Shield Spray for $14 or check out Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Hair Veil.

2. Cover It Well | Does anyone else hate when you’re outside for too long and one touch of your head actually burns?! Maybe not to the th-degree levels but it still gets pretty hot that you don’t want to touch it anymore. Try preventing it by sporting a cute scarf or headwrap. Offering protection from those UV rays, it also gives you a chance to add a fashionable accessory to your outfit.

F21 presents a very afforable option with this floral headwrap for just $3.80 or UO’s Paisley Headscarf would be a nice choice too. Or maybe even a floppy sun hat, since it is summer after all.

3. Keep It Light | Be aware of how much you’re actually putting into your hair before going out into the sun. All those gels, oils, and sheens can drastically heat up in the sun, lose their intended purpose, and actually burn and dry out your hair rather than help. Keep it to the bare minimum or skip altogether, I mean, the beachy and messy look is in every summer.

Hopefully this helped a bit - enjoy your fun in the sun!
