A recent bill is being considered for California, one that may determine whether teens will be strolling around with a glow or be forced to accept their natural, possibly paler, skin color…CA state Senator Ted Lieu has brought up a new bill that would essentially ban anyone under the age of 18 from accessing a tanning bed.

This is a change from the current law that prohibits those under 14 from fake n’ baking, while requesting parental permission from those between 14-18 who want to go to a tanning salon. The new bill would ban all under 18 strictly, even if the parent gives an OK.

Lieu’s argument to change things from how they are now is the fact that parent signatures that are accepted on permission forms can be forged (obviously), making them realistically invalid. But tanning salons will look the other way, since it benefits them to have another customer financially.

In his statement to the Wall Street Journal, he has tried to appeal to CA teens by emphasizing what will happen to them in keeping this tanning bed habit, “you will age doing this. Your skin will look more leathery later on.” Things most people already know, but for a teen maybe not that much of a consideration to take them away from their summer glow.

We’ll see what happens. It seems a bit intense, though I agree with the health concerns, but I almost feel like it might prompt more teens to get fake IDs or something…just to tan.
