Today’s edition of Origins of Cute features a character by the name of The Velveteen Rabbit!The Velveteen Rabbit is an inanimate toy given to a young boy during Christmas, but is soon snubbed in favor of the more expensive toys. The Rabbit soon discovers that if he receives true love from the boy, he’ll become real. After a series of events in which the Rabbit takes the place of a dog, the Rabbit is much loved but the boy is overcome by a bout of scarlet fever. In order to recover, the boy is taken to the seaside and given a new rabbit toy as his old toys, along with the Rabbit, are to be burned. However, because the Rabbit cries a real tear, the Nursery Magic Fairy appears and turns him into a real rabbit, allowing the Rabbit to roam freely and live as a living rabbit in the forest. More »
