Any fan of Demi Lovato knows that she was bullied on many occasions as a youngster. However, she’s not letting this get her down. In fact, she’s standing up to bullies by becoming the ambassador for Secret’s “Mean Stinks” campaign.
“I heard about the program last year, and thought it was such a great opportunity,” she explained to People. “They’re really trying to put an end to bullying.”
The campaign cleverly asks that teenage girls put blue nail polish on their pinky fingers to show that they will not take part in, or tolerate, bullying. Demi also plans on wearing a blue shade on her little fingers. “I’ll definitely be wearing it starting soon,” she stated. “It’s a conversation starter: ‘Hey, why is your pinky blue?’ ‘This is a pinky promise that I’m not going to bully people, that me and my friends are ganging up for good.’”
Being a mentor isn’t an easy job, but since Demi knows exactly how it feels to have been bullied, she is sure to be very sincere as an ambassador. “I had a really tough time when I was in middle school,” she explained. “People would write ‘hate petitions’ [about me] and send them around to be signed. They’d have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They’d come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away.”
Due to this, she got treatment in 2010, and is now confident that she can share her newly-found confidence with others. Good for her!
