Do you hate how you get spammed by Facebook apps every day from people who invite everyone on their friends list so that they can get extra points? Well, Bevy is a Facebook app that’s different. It can best be described as a social shopping platform for girls and women to discuss and discover products. I just started using it recently and love it! Basically allows me to indulge in a virtual closet in ways that I could never do with my real life closet ;)

Lisa Conquergood, the Director of Content and Community for Bevy, was kind enough to do a phone interview with me about Bevy, its plans for the future, and her favorite items in her own closet!

Ming MIn Hui: Where did the idea for Bevy originate? What was the inspiration for the name?
Lisa Conquergood: The founder of Bevy, Kevin Fourman, was working as an EIR in a Seattle incubator [editor's note: Bevy Inc. is based in Seattle, Washington] and one day his daughter Alex picked up an advertisement that had been sent to Kevin. Usually these mailings are quickly tossed out and never looked at but Kevin started to think that these ads, most of which are targeted at his wife and daughter, should be where his wife and daughter (specifically daughter) are. Where is his daughter? Well, she’s not looking at newspapers, she’s on Facebook and texting. So he developed this idea to build a platform right around the time Facebook opened third party applications, which turned out to be great timing. Focus groups told us not to create a new social network because everyone is already on Facebook, so rather we’re catering to the women that already exist within the Facebook network.

When I was younger I would wake up at 5am to turn on RAI television to watch the fashion shows from San Remo and Rome. I would watch these larger than life models take to the stage in the best of the best couture had to offer. So when I had the luxury to witness Chris Han’s show at Bryant Park I was elated at the opportunity.

Chris Han’s prêt-a-porter spring collection for next year transcends a classic femininity to a more of a progressive femininity for today’s fashion savvy chick. The runway was ablaze with many selections of style that diverted from her traditional monotone garments. Although, she has never had a bad collection, in the past there seemed to be less of a choice in the color palette of her collections. The colors she used for this collection truly embraced the season she was designing for. This is Chris Han’s best collection yet and her audience was very appreciative of her rising to the occasion.

To the tents! For the second installment in the Fashion Week Series, we bring coverage of Vivienne Tam, who showed her spring collection Tuesday night to packed house in the Promenade at Bryant Park. As the woman standing behind me as we waited for the room to clear out explained so eloquently to a friend on the other end of her iPhone, “Vivienne Tam used to be like, huge, in the nineties. She does a lot of, like, Asian-inspired stuff.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself: over a decade later, Tam’s iconic look— the only look really easily associable with the brand—remains the slinky stretch-nylon dresses silk-screened with a repeating print of Mao’s face, released in 1994. Tam, still drawing from China’s vibrant culture for inspiration, has established herself as one of the country’s premier designers, and purveyor to the West of what she calls “China Chic”.

Welcome to our three-part series covering NYC Fashion Week! We are pleased to bring you a firsthand look at the Spring 2009 collection of not one, not two, but THREE talented young Asian female fashion designers over the course of this week.

I had the pleasure of attending the Bryant Park debut show of our first feature, Thuy Diep, a fast-rising star of the designer women’s ready-to-wear market.  Lan and I arrived at the Salon at Bryant Park about 10 minutes before the show was scheduled to start (9pm). After all was said and done with navigating the masses and waiting on lines, we finally got into the show at 9:30pm and of course the lights didn’t dim until 9:40pm. This, I assume, is not an uncommon way to run things in the fashion world and the explanation for the term “fashionably late.”
