So lately, we’ve been showing you how to make paper roses, but those aren’t something you can really wear…so here are some Rose Barrettes from PurlBee you can accessorize your hair with. They’re pretty cute and not that difficult to make– there’s just a tiny bit of more sewing involved, but the picture tutorial is very clear, so no worries. More »

From Flauntme: It’s that time of the year again… people are packing their bags and heading home for the holidays or jetting off somewhere fun for New Years. It seems like there is no better time than now to take a refreshing break. But, as I am sure you all well know, traveling during the holidays can be quite a mess (security, lost luggage, dreadful delays) and can put a serious damper on your holiday cheer and your crazy fly-away hairs… ergo, Keratin Complex’s Travel Mini Flat Iron, the most adorable on-the-go travel tool that you can always rely on. From Flauntme: With that first date comes so much anticipation, and I’m here to take some of the guesswork out of prepping for your big night out. The first and most important thing to remember when going out with someone for the first time is to be yourself. You want him to love you for you, right? More »

How often is it that straight men pay attention to our hair? Not often. Not unless they happen to be stylists or…men who happened to be overly concerned with hair. Love songs equating first meeting experiences with the stages of a woman’s hair? Absolutely precious and actually real. Hellogoodbye’s When We First Met song is just that — a simple love song about meeting your significant other for the first time, in terms of…well, your hair. The music video is just as cute. And the song is painfully catchy! More »

As if there aren’t enough signs in the world telling me that life isn’t fair, I come across these Japanese fashion magazine scans of women fabulously rocking a hairstyle most women would wear on their ‘day off.’ Odango is Japanese for dumpling — if you can think of a ‘dumpling hair concept,’ you can easily visualize it as just being a messy bun on top of your head. And it’s painfully easy to do: More »

So Lan went and got a new hair colour. I decided to do so, too. Sort of. I decided to get my hair highlighted, and it came out blonde. I have nothing against it. In fact, I’m really happy with the results since some of my previous highlighting jobs turned out to the point that the highlights had no contrast! However, this job came out with more contrast I expected. So contrasting, that I’m practically a blonde, now, hahaha! Not really, but I sort of feel like it. More »

So last night I got to test run my stripper shoes and I also decided I’d switch up my look from wild playful curls to a sleek straight style. What’s even better is I got to test run both at Se7en’s party at Circle with Ningin Fam’s Mia, David, and my home girl Christina, who DJ’s for Soompi Radio Club. I gotta say I’ve got sorta a mixed feeling about my hair and I’m still in love with my shoes. Check it: More »

Back in the day, I use to dye my hair every color under the sun, but stopped after I realized my hair was about fall off my head. Now; however, I’m back in the game.
I recently dyed my hair dark brown with blonde highlights. While its only as good as a DIY hair dye kit can get, I still love it. I actually feel more confident now (no idea why) which makes me wonder, does this happen for everyone? Is changing something about yourself good for yourself?

For those of you always on the go, you probably never have time to do your hair. I hate when that happens to me so when TotalBeauty put the up the list of “17 Hairstyles That Take Less Than 10 Minutes”, I was thrilled.
Most the hairstyles are very cute while others are generic. My personal favorites are “The Audrey”, “High-Volume Pony”, “Hello, Sailor”, and “Vintage Vamp”. All of which seem easy to do and look classy.

Well, Bumble and bumble. is offering free styling, cuts, and/or color with their Model Project. Bb.U’s program offers students real live models to practice their craft on, and you (the model) a free hairstyle! There’s only one catch. Don’t go in just looking for a trim, because that’s not what they need you for. If you’re adventurous and ready for a new ‘do, then this could be for you. And since budgets are getting cut left and right, why not! IT’S FREE!
Cuts range from short layers to long men’s razor cuts and even to whatever is the current style trend. If you do the styling, you can get a blow dry, french roll, and a few more, color options are cool too, from a single process to highlights, or single process with highlights!
Head over to Bumble and bumble’s Model Project for more info on what’s offered and how you can sign up.

If you’re not of African descent, the phrases “Good Hair” and “Bad Hair” may just seem like innocent ways to say you’re having a good hair day/bad hair day…or someone’s hairstyle is hideous/gorgeous…but if you are Black or African American, then you know how truly disturbing those little phrases can be. They can and have scarred many Black, African and even some Latino people with natrually kinky and tightly curled hair into thinking there is something wrong with them, that they need to change it, that their hair and consequently they themselves, just aren’t good enough. It’s a very big issue within the African American society specifically because it stems from slavery days when those with “good hair” and “light skin” (example: mixed race slaves) were allowed to be the house slaves while the “bad hair” and “dark skinned” ones had to work in the fields. Also mixed into that is the then later on practice of colorism by Black people themselves.

I’m totally preoccupied with career stuff right now so my posts are probably going to be engineered towards that kind of stuff for a while. I had to learn some tricky things in the process of job hunting that no one but other college-age girls are conscious of, and so here’s to sharing the wealth.
Career Advice of the Day: Business attire is not club attire. Even if you don’t want to work in a corporate setting or don’t plan on it, at some point in time you will probably be in a situation where you need to look it (for interviews or a meeting or anything). This is a brief set of guidelines and hints that work in most industries, but definitely do some research since some industries (i.e. banking) are much stricter than others (i.e. non-profits).
Takeaway lesson should be there are ways to look hot (I mean check out the VS model on the left) without looking like a slut ;)
Suit: Wear a two-pieced matching suit (solid, darker colors such as black, brown, or navy are better if the situation is more conservative). The bottom can be pants or a skirt.
Pants: If you choose pants, they shouldn’t be so low on your hips that you have a muffin top or risk butt-crack exposure, and they shouldn’t be so tight around your ass that it screams slut. They also shouldn’t be so long that you trip over them in your heels. No skinny legs or big flowing trousers. More »
Yeah, so you know how I’m obsessed with my hair? And how I constantly change my hairstyle? Right. So last night I decided to give a go at finger coils. What’s a finger coil? Well, it’s basically when you coil your hair around your finger (or rat-tail comb) in a spiral curl which you then set to dry. Think of it as a straw set, without the straws. The only difference to me, is that straw sets can be worked on almost any hair type, while finger coils are best for naturally curly hair. Anywho, yes, I gave myself a finger coil style…and it was horrible!

I love head wraps. They’re easy, and they can ad a bit of funk to any outfit, especially something so casual as a plain T and some jeans. Head wraps can also help camouflauge a bad hair day, much in the way a cute hat or cap can. Except that head wraps are more girly and fun and you’re not left with “hat hair” at the end of the day. You’ve probably seen head wraps worn by celebs in the past such as Jennifer Lopez, and Christina Milian, but I know that many girls are either afraid to wear one, or they just don’t know how to put it on!

OMG! I’m really excited to say that I just read that Honey Magazine will be rising from the dead as an online mag/community!! You have no I.D.E.A. how much this is making my day because I used to love to read Honey along with Jump! and Suede magazines, both now defuct, but both VERY awesome! There’s also Honey’s competition Vibe Vixen, but I don’t read that one too often. Either way, there was/is just something different [real] about these magazines and it’s really sad that they had to shut down. HOWEVER! with Honey coming back, I’m uber excited!
If you’ve no clue what I’m talking about, Honey Magazine was one of the very few magazines aimed at Black women that wasn’t boring, or repetative (Hi, Essence! Hi, Ebony!) Maybe it’s because it was targeting the younger women and I just can’t relate to the articles in the other Black mags, but Honey was like a breath of fresh air. Fresh and affordable clothing, great hairstyle ideas, realistic advice, and models who LOOKED LIKE ME! <33
I REALLY cannot wait until it launches, as I will be one of the first signed up! HAHA
Now just put Suede Back into publication and I’ll be straight. In the meantime though, I’ll just get my Suede-esque fix from her long lost twin LUIRE. <33
HAHAH no, I’m not conceited or anything, I just think that every now and then its good to remind yourself what you love about yourself. If you think about it, everyday we girls are up against the world and even our own minds telling us what’s wrong with us. So I thought I’d share with you guys a few things that I like about me. Yay for Self-Esteeeeeeem! More »
Not to sound egotistical or anything, but I’ve been told by more than one person that they liked my fringes (bangs in American English XD). For the longest time, that baffled me. I had no idea why some people kept gushing about how they like and want my fringes, and I just give them a blank look and go, “Wha–?”
Finally, I asked one of my friends the reasoning behind it. She told me that my fringes have volume (or body?), and because of it, they don’t exactly stay flat on my forehead. After she told me that, I realised that she’s right. My fringes have volume. And that was the cause of my horrible trims I had for my fringes!
See, in the past, whenever I went to have them trimmed, I always tell the person to cut below my eyebrows because I look stupid when it’s shorter than that. I hated the end results because my fringes came out ending above my eyebrows, and I would become one unsatisfied customer. Well, it took me a while to realise that my fringes needed to be trimmed DRY not WET. Now that I know the reason why, I always ask for dry trim and tell them to cut where it meets the bottom of my eyes. More »

Yep, I sure do! Chescaleigh is a Youtuber, who’s absolutely addicting. She sings, acts, knits, does comedy, and gives awesome hair tips for natural chicks. I found her because I was looking for something to do with my hair, and I came across one of her tutorials, and from there I immediately subscribed to her videos. Just give her a gander, and you’ll see why!!
