In other words: the retailer has tapped a crew of successful individuals who are known more for their work, than their faces. More »

Is it just me or are knee-high socks a new trend? I still remember rejecting anything higher than ankle socks in junior high, so I’m not sure when it became cool to have socks go as high up your leg as possible and come in as many funky patterns and colors as possible…
Then again I’m basing this off of a trip to J Crew where they had all these knee-highs on sale. It also got crazy cold in the last couple of days and the excuse to tromp around in long warm fuzzy socks + tall winter boots is my one consolation.
Over the summer I bought a pair of bright pink knee high socks with white stripes for lyrical dancing and it’s pretty much as close to the sk8ter chick/Girlicious look I’ll ever get. They make me ridiculously happy even though they’re never visible beyond the dance studio or running around my dorm room.
Rule #3 - Browse Don’t Binge: I pass the local J Crew, Thom Brown, and Urban Outfitters on Broadway Street in New Haven on a regular basis and I have a habit of stepping in to take a look every so often just in case. 9 times out of 10 I don’t find anything, but every so often there’s a crazy good deal on something that I definitely would have missed if I didn’t browse often. This could mean one month I snag a cute JCrew three-quarter sleeve sweatshirt and a pair of chic Blowfish flats half-off. And then a month later I spot a v-neck tissue tee sale. Another month later the babydoll dress I’ve been eyeing all semester has been respotted on the clearance rack. And so on.
In this way I slowly accumulate great pieces from these usually pricey brands instead of blowing tons of money in one shopping spree. A few minutes to browse stores here and there with low expectations can save a lot in the long run. I browse every time I’m around a store that looks promising and I have a bit of time to kill. I never expect to buy anything so that I’m not tempted, but if I DO find that killer deal then I’m all the happier to have made the stop!
I made a bet with a friend last night about how much the stock market would jump and boy we were wrong… the markets have actually gone down today, continuing a rapid downward trend in the economy that has been going on for a long time now.
What does this mean for us? Well, the average consumer’s spending money is taking a hit. So in times like this we should take a leaf out of Michelle Obama’s look-great-frugally book (she gets some great sets from JCrew apparently). I’ve always been a fan of seeing how low I can go when it comes to fashion budget, and now those habits are starting to pay off.
My philosophy: As long as a girl isn’t so picky and is willing to be patient, her pockets can run a lot deeper than she thinks.
Personally, I can be so stingy that even that $68 dress pictured here is too expensive for my tastes - I don’t buy cute cocktail dresses unless they’re under $20. $30 if brand name. If you’re curious how I manage to pull that kind of rule up, stay tuned this week: I plan on sharing a tip a day of tried-and-true ways to shop on a budget. Some are easy habits you can try out with your very next trip to the mall or things that simply build up with habit over time. And if any seem really obvious, my apologies in advance, but they may not be so obvious to everyone! Today I start with… More »
